I recently visited Honda, which currently employs 3500 workers at its large industrial site in Swindon, to discuss the impact that the European economic downturn is having upon its operation. This was especially poignant in the wake of Honda’s announcement to reduce its workforce by 800.

The second round of the North Somerset Schools Parliamentary Debating Competition 2013 took place last Friday. Discussing the motion ‘this House believes that nuclear energy is a gamble too far’, the 7 teams from schools across the county put forward the arguments of the Government and the Opposition.

Since the European Council agreed to cut the EU budget for the first time in 56 years, the European Parliament has been posturing and positioning itself to stand against the wishes of national governments. Some MEPs are now talking of holding a secret ballot in an effort to thwart the wishes of Member States.

I recently visited the Bristol Credit Union (BCU) to learn more about this local banking provider. The Bristol Credit Union was formed after the merger of four smaller credit unions and has been at its current location for over 5 years. They now have over 9000 members and are continuing to grow every month.

I was delighted to visit Guide Dogs for the Blind at their regional headquarters in Exeter to discuss EU proposals on vehicle noise levels that would affect everyone’s safety, in particular blind and partially sighted pedestrians.

With the horsemeat scandal still engulfing the food industry I met with Devon based farmers near Exeter earlier this week. At a well attended meeting, organised by the NFU, local farmers voiced their concerns regarding the problems facing British food producers, the proposed reforms to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the impact that 12 months of almost constant rain is having on the food chain.

In the run-up to crucial budget negotiations in Brussels today South West MEP, Ashley Fox, has condemned French President François Hollande's support for the wasteful travelling circus. The practice of the European Parliament shuttling between two cities costs the taxpayer an estimated €200M a year.

The Government has announced that Airbus is soon to receive £1.4million investment from its Regional Growth Fund, leading to the creation of 200 jobs in Filton. The funding will be used for a training programme designed to grow Britain’s world-leading engineering capabilities.
