22nd April 2010

Dear Editor,
Next month the EU accounts will be coming before the European Parliament for approval, despite the fact that these have not been signed off by the auditors for the last 15 years.

Both I and my Conservative colleagues will be voting against these accounts, if we rubber stamp these accounts then all we are doing is encouraging more waste and more fraud.

Yet every year this is exactly what Labour and Liberal Democrat MEPs do.
Trust in politicians is at an all time low. We will reduce our standing further if we are seen to condone waste and fraud. Every time we vote to grant discharge we send a signal to the Commission and our constituents that we don't treat this issue seriously.
My Party will look carefully at how Labour and Liberal Democrats MEPs decide to vote this year, maybe with an election looming they will finally decide to take their responsibility to the tax payer seriously.

They can´t argue at home that they want to bring change to politics, to clean up and reform politics and yet year on year vote to accept these substandard accounts.
I and anyone else who is serious about reforming this system and about protecting the taxpayer should be voting against these dodgy accounts in May.

Yours Sincerely,

Ashley Fox
MEP for the South West of England and Gibraltar
