The Devon MEP Ashley Fox is welcoming the resumption of trade talks that will benefit Devon's oyster industry.
Negotiators from Europe and the USA are meeting in Brussels today for further talks on TTIP - a transatlantic trade deal with the USA.
Presently, British oysters can not be sold in the US because of a difference in rules. To ensure they’re free of dangerous bacteria, the US tests the water in which oysters are grown. In Europe we test the oyster itself. Scientists confirm both ways of testing are equally good. So with TTIP, Devon oyster producers should only have to pass EU tests to gain access to the US.
Mr Fox said, “A trade deal will benefit everyone in the South West and open a huge market currently for many products like oysters. It will simplify rules, lower prices and empower consumers through choice and lower prices.”
