Prime Minister David Cameron's successful renegotiation of the UK's European Union membership has been welcomed by the leader of Conservative MEPs in Brussels.
Ashley Fox said the deal paved the way for the historic referendum the party pledged to hold in its 2015 General Election manifesto.
"The EU has changed significantly since the last referendum in 1975. It is now right that the British people are being given the opportunity to decide our future membership under improved terms secured by our Prime Minister," said Mr Fox, MEP for the South West of England and Gibraltar.
"I know there will be good Conservatives on both sides of this debate and I look forward to a vigorous, constructive and respectful campaign over the coming months.
"Ultimately the decision rests with the British people. The Conservative Party will come together after the vote to implement that decision, whatever the result may be."
