The Gibraltar MEP Ashley Fox is asking the EU Commission to update Gibraltar residents on whether the controversial CEPSA oil refinery close to Gibraltar/Spanish border is complying with European environmental and pollution regulations.
In 2011 the San Roque-based refinery was found to be breaking laws regarding pollution. The EU Commission promised to monitor the owners actions to rectify the problems.
Constituents have now contacted Mr Fox through Gibraltar’s Environmental Safety Group demanding to know why the Commission has not issued a progress report since 2011 or at least stated whether CEPSA now conforms to European laws.
Mr Fox said, “Pollution respects no boundaries so what happens just over the border does impact on the daily lives of Gibraltarians so I have asked the Commission to respond urgently and let my constituents know whether CEPSA complies or not."
