South West beef is to be made available to consumers in Canada for the first time in nearly 20 years.
The Canadian government has agreed to re-open its market to British beef and other bovine products following a ban put in place in the 1990s.
South West MEP Ashley Fox said, “British Beef is among the best in the world and its provenance is unrivalled, ensuring the highest standards and quality and I am delighted that these long standing trade barriers have been lifted. Our beef has been off the menu in Canada for far too long."
“British beef farmers are currently experiencing difficult times with Russian markets closed and China experiencing an economic slowdown so I am sure this important breakthrough will be keenly welcomed. I would like to see the few countries left with trading restrictions to follow Canada’s lead and lift their bans."
